Set-Up Walk Through using your admin panel

Getting Started with inPedigree

First off, Congratulations on your new inPedigree website. We hope you have a pleasurable and easy experience building and maintaining your website. If you follow these instructions in the order they are given your site creation will be smooth and easy.

Designing your site (if you have purchased the design package you may skip this part)

Designing your site is easy with inPedigree. First you must log into your admin panel (http://www.mysite.com/admin/) using the user name and password sent in your inPedigree startup email.

Layout:

After log in you will automatically be sent to the Appearances Tab -> layout option. Here you will select the layout you wish your site to have. You may choose from a single column layout (page links and category links on top), a two column left layout (page links on top and category links on left side bar), or a two column right layout (page links on top and category links in a right side bar). Once you select the layout you wish click on "Save these changes".

Colors and images:

Next, while still in the Appearances Tab, select the "Colors and Images" option from the blue bar under the tabs. On this page you truly design the look of your site. You can set the background colors and upload background images for each part of your site (body, site area, header, side columns and footer). You can also set the text colors, link colors, navigation colors and category link colors separately. Feel free to play around with different color combinations until you get a look you like. The side columns are set to 205px wide and the top navigation and footer are both 37 px high. If you would like custom images please contact us....we are more than happy to help. We have done some samples that you are free to use located at http://www.inpedigree.com/image-samples.php Just right click on the image you want to use and save it to your desktop. Then you can upload it into your site design. There are also many sites on the web offering background textures free for download. Just do a web search for "free background textures" and you will find many of them.

You may also upload your Logo on this page, and, set the alignment of the logo to left, center or right. The size of the header on your page is directly determined by the size of your logo.

If you wish us to design your site for you just select that option on your hosting signup form and we will contact you regarding the look and feel of your site. We also do logos.

That's it - your site is designed and now you need to add your content.

Site Set up and Utilities

Here we will discuss setting up your personal information, display preferences, and utility options. You only need to do these items once and doing them first will make adding pages, content and animals simple and easy.

Utilities Tab:

After clicking on the utilites tab the first page you will see will be a page allowing you to add animal breeds, breeder names and colors/markings. Fill in these fields and click "Save this informatiom". You may add as many breeds, colors and breeders as you wish. Just click the save button after each entry. Remember that colors and breeders "can" be displayed on your pedigrees too so add the colors and breeder names that you know may show up on your pedigrees if you choose that option.

There are other options under the Utilities tab: Newsletter management, Guestbook Management and Links Management. We will address these later in the instructions.

Your Details Tab:

Your Details: Under this tab you enter your personal details. Any of the information here may be set to show in your page footers if you wish. The breed drop down list should show the breeds you entered in the Utilities Tab earlier. It is important that you enter a valid email address in the Email field. This is the address your "Contact Us" page will send messages too.

Display Options: Select display options from the blue bar under the "Your Details" Tab. Here you select the information you want displayed in your footer, in your individual animal pages, and in your pedigrees. Please note that it is not necessary to select Sire and Dam options in the pedigrees as they will be shown in the pedigree table. (this option is scheduled to be removed on a future upgrade). Pedigrees will automatically show images if there are images available for any of the animals shown in that pedigree.

Pages Tab:Add Page/Categories: The first page you are directed to under this tab will show the pages that are pre-installed with your package. If you do not want to use any of these pages simply "uncheck" the box next to the page you don't want. Please note that the "Home" page will always show whether you uncheck it or not. This is necessary to the integrity of the site. Next Select the categories you wish to have pedigrees in. If you uncheck one of these categories, any animal appearing in that category will not have a pedigree link on it's page. If you add more categories you can come back to this option and turn on or off the pedigrees.

On this page you can add new pages such as "Your breed standard", "Applications" or other informational pages you want to use on your site.

Next you add your "Categories" These are the categories you wish your animals to appear in such as "our boys", "our girls", "At stud", "Our Foundation", etc.... These categories will display exactly as you enter them but can be edited later or deleted if you wish to change them. Click the "Save this information" button after making each entry. You may enter as many pages and categories as you like but remember that a large amount of pages may make your navigation bar look crowded or wrap around. Please contact us if you need custom styles made to accomodate a large number of pages.Specialty Pages: Select the Specialty pages option in the blue bar under the tabs. Here you set your options for your Links and Guestbook entries. It is suggested that you set both links and guestbook entries for approval in admin prior to being displayed. This will prevent unwanted spam entries from being displayed on your pages without you knowing about it. You may accept both text and banner links or both. Set that option here. For your Guestbook you can set which items you wish displayed on your page: Name, email and message. Remember that your visitors may not want their email addresses displayed. So that is a consideration in setting this up.Manage Pages option: Select this option to delete any pages you have added. The 4 pre-installed pages cannot be deleted but remember you can turn them off under the "Your Details Tab ->Display Options". Any text pages you have added can be deleted here. Your set up is done - Now your ready to add content!!Text Page Content:

Your page Content is added and edited under the pages tab - Edit Page Content option (in the blue bar below the tabs). On this admin page you select the page you want to edit content for from the dropdown menu. Click the "Select this page" Button. Your page will appear in the text editor below. If you have not added content to a page yet this will appear blank - don't worry you are working on your page now. Add your text and set the font colors, sizes and alignment using the buttons at the top of the text editor window. You may also insert pictures if you have a web url for the picture and you can also make tables and lists using the buttons at the top of the editor.

If you are familiar with HTML you may use the HTML mode button to add code yourself but this is not necessary for adding content.

Your Animals

Now finally the part you've been waiting for. Getting your animals and pedigrees online. Two things to take note of.

1. Pedigrees are built based on choosing an animals parents from the database when you enter/edit that animal. So to make pedigree building automatic you should enter the oldest dogs in your pedigrees first. This allows the older animals to be in the database for selection as parents.

2. Images. To avoid issues with uploading and displaying images for your animals please ensure the following:

  • They are not too large (photos coming directly off camaras or scanners are much too large for web use. If you do not have the software to resize them there are many online sites for uploading and resizing your images prior to adding them to your animals.
  • Make sure the images are named properly. Spaces and special characters in the image name will cause problems with the upload and display. Additionally the image type suffix (jpg or gif) should be lower case. If you have issues with images displaying or uploading please check these items first before asking for support.

Adding Animals:

Select the Add Animals option (this will read "Add Dogs" if you entered dogs in your hosting signup, "Add Horses" if you entered horses, etc...). The fields on this screen are self explanatory.

  • Select whether or not this animal will appear in your pages (unchecked for animals being used for pedigree use only)
  • Select whether or not the animal will have it's own photo gallery (also unchecked for animals being used for pedigrees only)
  • Select whether or not the animal will be used in your pedigrees.
  • Select from the dropdown menu what primary category this animal will appear in. Leave this option to the default "pedigrees" if the animal is being used for pedigree building only.
  • Check any boxes for additional categorys you wish this animal to appear in (it is not necessary to check the box for the primary category that was previously selected).
  • Enter a Call name
  • Enter any titles appearing prior to the Animals Registered name
  • Enter the Animal's Registered name. Even if your animal is not registered, something must be entered here. If your animal is not registered use the call name again or some other descriptive text. This will appear at the top of that animals individual page.
  • Enter any titles that appear after the animals registered name.
  • Date of Birth - can be left blank if unknown.
  • Select Gender - this is very important for pedigrees to work correctly
  • Select Breeder from dropdown list - this shows the names of breeders you entered in the Utilities tab
  • Select Colors/Markings from dropdown list - this shows colors you entered in the Utilities tab
  • Select sire from dropdown list - This shows all of the male animals entered in your Database by registered name
  • Select dam from dropdown list - This shows all of the female animals entered in your Database by registered name
  • Click Browse and upload an image to be used as the primary image for this animal. If an animal is "edigree use only" this is the image that will appear in the photo pedigrees.
  • Click Browse and upload additional images for animals that will have a photo gallery. You may upload 4 additional images at a time and can add more by editing this animal after it is created.
  • Add description for this animal. This is the text that appears on this animals individual page. You can add as much text as you like

Click "Save this information" If you are uploading images in the process saving may take a couple of minutes. When done there will be a message at the top of the page saying that the information is saved. If you get an error while uploading this means that the permission are not set correctly on your image directory or that there is an issue with the image itself. You can contact support to have directory permissions corrected. Please check the image for correct naming and appropriate size.

Have a "lot" of animals or pedigrees to add? Let us do it for you. We will enter up to 1000 animals in your database for use in your pedigrees and pages (that's 32 pedigrees) for a one time fee of $50. Select this option when signing up for your hosting package.

Editing Animals:

When you select the "Edit Animals" option from the blue bar under the "Animals Tab" you will be presented with a dropdown list of all of the animals in your database. Choose the animal you wish to edit and click the "select" button. The Animal data page will appear below that box...scroll down. You can then make any changes you wish, upload new images or delete images in the photo gallery and then click save this information. Again if uploading images this may take a couple minutes depending on the number of images and their size.

Previewing your site:

In every tab of the admin panel there will be a link in the blue bar that says preview site. This opens a window with your site in it so you can view any changes you have made.

The support tab takes you directly to the customer support site. You can log in..enter/view support tickets or read the knowledgebase. There is also a link on this page to the support forums.
